An enhanced geographic knowledge is accomplished, as well as the elimination of Interstate Ennui. truck from a distance, and say to myself, “Phoenix, Arizona.” Thus, the listing of trucklines not only occupies one while compiling, but also in regular observing. (I have also seen different cities listed for a particular carrier, on different pieces of their equipment e.g., Country Wide Truck Service has Corona, CA on some trucks and Fontana, CA on others!) But, for all intents and purposes, these lists are as complete as an amateur truck observer like myself needs in order to be able to see, for instance, a Swift Transportation Co. Similarities in name, or relocation of company, consolidations, bankruptcies, etc., can make my listings inaccurate. ![]() This vastly increased my listings, but there is one caveat to be observed: on occasion, a truckline may appear to be what is listed in the NMCD, but in reality may not actually be the listed line. After listing lines for awhile, I began to check out truck stops, and recorded whatever information was visible to me while travelling, and obtained a copy of the National Motor Carrier Directory for subsequent lookups. if the print is too small, or obscure, or the colors too difficult to read print, I don’t list that line). Recently, I have decided to narrow down the scope of my list to those trucklines with equipment which is readily identifiable from across the highway median ( i.e. When travelling on Interstates, for instance, perhaps dozens of trucks pass in the opposite lanes for every truck passed (or passed by) in one’s own lanes. But a handicap in that approach is that the observer must be very close to the truck, with little relative movement between it and the observer’s vehicle, in order to get clear copy of the pertinent data. At first, I listed only trucklines which listed both the company name and the hometown on the equipment. As can be expected, certain regions have a preponderance of one or several trucklines, but many can be found throughout North America, from what I have seen. These lists are compiled from sightings I have made over the past few years, on numerous intra- and interstate travels, and indeed in Canada (from Thunder Bay to Kingston, ON). ![]()
